Description:

This is a signed and numbered Fujiflex print from a limited edition portfolio of 50 prints, from Claudia Toutain-Dorbec's 2008 project: A Year in the Southwest: An Exploration of the Natural World.

Claudia Toutain-Dorbec (1949-) is a contemporary American artist who works in multi-media and includes photography, painting, drawing, collage, and sculpture in her work. Using mostly an antique large format Graflex 4x5” film camera with special mounting and lighting, and occasionally a large-format high definition scanner used like a camera, she created a unique collection of approximately 250 botanical images.

All the original botanical specimens were saved, carefully dried and documented after the project was completed. Approximately fifty additional images were created with a professional digital camera of those dried specimens. A limited edition photobook, numbered and signed by the artist, will be published soon.

Specimens for the project were gathered in Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico, and photographed in unusual arrangements. The artist often grouped or bundled one specimen, or several specimens found at a single location, into the one arrangement. Sometimes birds, stones, dried wood, insects or found objects were included to create a dialog of the visit. An example of the locations include many roadside stops in all three states and the artist's and neighbors' gardens in New Mexico.
